Four out of Five Stars
The Summary: Nothing can stop true love. Not time. Not even the devil himself.
1805. Laurent: Indentured servant. Desperate to escape a life that is falling apart.
2017. Beast: Kings of Hell Motorcycle Club vice president. His fists do the talking.
Beast has been disfigured in a fire, but he’s covered his skin with tattoos to make sure no one mistakes his scars for weakness. The accident not only hurt his body, but damaged his soul and self-esteem, so he’s wrapped himself in a tight cocoon of violence and mayhem where no one can reach him.
Until one night, when he finds a young man covered in blood in their clubhouse.
Sweet, innocent, and as beautiful as an angel fallen from heaven, Laurent pulls on all of Beast’s heartstrings. Laurent is so lost in the world around him, and is such a tangled mystery, that Beast can’t help but let the man claw his way into the stone that is Beast’s heart.
In 1805, Laurent has no family, no means, and his eyesight is failing. To escape a life of poverty, he uses his beauty, but that only backfires and leads him to a catastrophe that changes his life forever. He takes one step into the abyss and is transported to the future, ready to fight for a life worth living.
What he doesn’t expect in his way is a brutal, gruff wall of tattooed muscle with a tender side that only Laurent is allowed to touch. And yet, if Laurent ever wants to earn his freedom, he might have to tear out the heart of the very man who took care of him when it mattered most.
A deal with the devil sets everything in motion.
Laurent is thrust into a time that has him confused and unsure of himself. He has a task he has to complete otherwise he goes back to the life he left behind, indentured servitude and a murderer. He’s found by Beast, the VP of the Kings of Hell Motorcycle Club, a man who is scarred and tattooed to the point that people fear him. Beast is drawn into taking care of Laurent, no matter how frustrating the task may get, he comes back to making sure Laurent is taken care of and not taken advantage of.
This is not your typical MC book. By which I mean, it’s not overly crude, overflowing with gaudy sex scenes, or violent. There’s an actual storyline, praise be I liked this one a lot. There’s time travel, presented in a fresh manner. This is this first, deal with the devil, time travel story that I’ve read and I wasn’t let down. At all.
Laurent had to figure out modern technology and the social norms quickly. There were moments that I got second hand embarrassment for him and other times he was absolutely adorable. Beast, there were a few times were I wanted to shake sense into him, but he was definitely a decent fella who faced some pretty serious hardships in his life.
Knight, a secondary character, a genealogy buff surprised me. You don’t expect a guy in a MC to be into genealogy but it was excellent. Beast and the rest of the guys just accepted that part of him, and eventually came to request his assistance to figure out what happened in Laurent’s time.
I liked that we didn’t get a complete explanation until the end what the deals made actually were and how they affected Beast. Like it was kind of diabolical and I was surprised that a father would make the deal he had made. This was thrilling, sweet, entertaining, and everything you need in a book to make it good.
