Learned Behaviors by Jayce Ellis

Learned Behaviors (Higher Education, #1)

Four out of Five Stars

Summary

Two single dads meet at the office where it’s hate at first sight in this new series from acclaimed author Jayce Ellis.

Sending his daughter off to college is the proudest day of single dad JaQuan Reynolds’ life. Everything took a back seat to raising her—including his career. He has no idea what comes next, but his newfound freedom is quickly curtailed by a crash deadline at work and the uptight, hovering presence of consultant Matthew Donaldson. He’s surly and insufferably sexy, and Jaq’s ready to check him out and write him off—right up until a work assignment forces them together.

Every day. From now until Thanksgiving.

Work and fatherhood have been Matt’s whole world for years now, ever since his marriage ended. His eldest son is getting hitched over Thanksgiving weekend, and he’s not going to let a work deadline get in the way of celebrating with his family—not this time. The hours aren’t a problem, but the executive assistant on the project might be. Jaq’s sexy voice makes Matt yearn for things he let go of a long time ago.

Lust isn’t on the schedule, and neither is longing. But as the weeks go by, Matt and Jaq are forced to reevaluate their plans…and discover that even the most tight-knit of families can make room for one more.

Review

This was the first novel I’ve read by Jayce Ellis, and I loved it! I’ve got all the rest of Jayce’s novels on my wishlist.

JaQuan Reynolds is a dedicated, hardworking, young single-father. At 35 he’s dropping his daughter off for her first days of college and finding out who he is outside of fatherhood. He loves his job, but being thrown head first into a time crunch with a partner company to release a line of home goods for Black Friday, it’s stressful.

What JaQuan didn’t factor in was Matt and how, smart, determined, and undeniably attractive the man was. Matt is a little too married to his job and it shows in his family life. He almost doesn’t get an invitation to his son’s wedding, his daughter doesn’t talk to him about her personal life, and his ex-wife has little faith in him when it comes to anything besides work.

What I loved what how distinctive JaQuan and Matt were. I could hear their voices in my head as I read, and oh my, it felt like fingertips dancing down my spine. I was in the office they worked in, on campus with their girls and at Matt’s son’s wedding. I could picture their daughters, Jaq’s mother like they were my family. The secondary characters, were strong, independent women. I don’t think we get that enough in books. They were just as important to Jaq and Matt’s storyline as their interactions were. Ellis paints a vivid picture with her writing.

JaQuan, while younger than Matt, taught Matt more about the important things in life. Your family, friends, and individual happiness is more important than the whir of work. Someone is always there to take your place at work, but not with your family.

The chemistry between Jaq and Matt *fans self* oh from the moment they laid eyes on each other I could feel the heat. They may not have liked each other all that much in the beginning, but the more they worked together the more intense their feelings became. I do wish there was a little more to the romance scenes.

I’m going to go see which book I’m going to buy next!

The Summary: Trapped in an elevator with her boss…

Ellie has been trying to keep her distance from Casey, her supervisor, ever since last year’s Christmas party. A quickie in a bathroom stall left both women breathless…and more than a little embarrassed when they rejoined the party. Workplace snogging is highly inappropriate.

Though enormously erotic.

Body temperatures are already rising when Ellie and Casey find themselves alone in the elevator one Friday night at the office. When the lift comes to a grinding stop, awkward isn’t large enough a word.

Trapped in an elevator with her boss. Her tall, powerful, beautiful boss—the woman who monopolizes Ellie’s fantasies and sneaks into her dreams.

Whatever will they do to pass the time?

The Review

First, let me give you a little background on Dirty Bits by Carina Press. Dirty Bits gives you what you want, when you want it. Designed to be read in an hour or two, these sex-filled microromances are guaranteed to pack a punch and deliver a happily-ever-after. So any time I review one of these, expect a micro-review, because I’m not giving everything away 😉

Ellie and her boss, Casey, may have crossed a line in a bathroom stall at the previous work Christmas Party. It’s been months and Ellie has been avoiding Casey and only speaking to her boss about work matters when they used to be friends with each other. It takes getting trapped in an elevator for a couple of hours together for Ellie to relive the mind blowing experience, and try to figure out where they went wrong.

The sex between the two is going to leave you fanning yourself and wondering how Ellie could have ever let Casey disappear out of her life as a potential lover. There’s a specific part that I wasn’t really into and I’m finding this in a lot of lesbian erotica, check the tags for that spoiler, but the rest of it was great. I’d definitely want to visit Ellie and Casey again to find out how their relationship has progressed.

Summary:  Love conquers all. But can it survive Christmas?

Dominic and Tristan have been together for almost a year. So everything’s got to be plain sailing, right? Not quite. Not if you ask Dominic. Tristan’s a bundle of energy and crazy ideas at the best of times. Add in Christmas, and it’s a recipe for disaster.

That’s not the only issue. There’s also Tristan’s mysterious absences and secret phone calls to contend with. Dominic might be insecure, but he’s not crazy. His boyfriend is definitely up to something, and neither family nor friends seem interested in listening to his concerns. He won’t jump to conclusions this time though. He’ll talk to Tristan. Only what do you do when you can’t get a straight answer out of the man you love?

When Tristan’s secrets are revealed, will their first Christmas together also be their last? Or is Dominic about to discover that all his worries have been for nothing?

Only time will tell.

The (mini) Review

A Christmas Situation is a bit of a holiday bonus novella that gives us a glimpse into the continuation of Tristian and Dominic’s relationship. It’s been a year since they’ve gotten together and they’re still going strong. Or so it seems. Tristian has been acting extremely secretive and disappearing from the office a lot more than usual. Poor Dom thought he knew what he was in for when it comes to Tristian. He doesn’t even know what he’s in for when it comes to the holidays.

Tristian is a bit overzealous when it comes to Christmas surprises involving Dominic. I feel like he may have overstepped buuut Dominic liked the results so I can’t find fault in it. I did expect the little surprise at the end and was excited to see it happen! My lips are zipped, so you have to read it to find out what I’m talking about. But yay!

Overall, an excellent addition to Tristian and Dom’s story.

A Temporary Situation by H.L. Day

Four out of Five Stars

The Summary: Personal assistant Dominic is a consummate professional. Funny then, that he harbors such unprofessional feelings toward Tristan Maxwell, the CEO of the company. No, not in that way. The man may be the walking epitome of gorgeousness dressed up in a designer suit. But, Dominic’s immune. Unlike most of the workforce, he can see through the pretty facade to the arrogant, self-entitled asshole below. It’s lucky then, that the man’s easy enough to avoid.

Disaster strikes when Dominic finds himself having to work in close proximity as Tristan’s P.A. The man is infuriatingly unflappable, infuriatingly good-humored, and infuriatingly unorthodox. In short, just infuriating. A late-night rescue leading to a drunken pass only complicates matters further, especially with the discovery that Tristan is both straight and engaged.

Hatred turns to tolerance, tolerance to friendship, and friendship to mutual passion. One thing’s for sure, if Tristan sets his sights on Dominic, there’s no way Dominic has the necessary armor or willpower to keep a force of nature like Tristan at bay for long, no matter how unprofessional a relationship with the boss might be. He may just have to revise everything he previously thought and believed in for a chance at love.

The Review

Dominic is the most professional, professional while at work, unless it concerns the CEO Tristian Maxwell. Dominic doesn’t understand why the rest of his co-workers can’t see under all of Tristian’s playfulness is a cold hearted CEO who doesn’t think well of his employees. Dominic is thankful he doesn’t have work directly with Tristian. Until he does. No matter how hard Dominic tries to keep Tristian at arms-length at all times, but Tristian won’t let him.

It’s hard not to like Tristian though. He is obsessed with food, has a sense of humor and is often times in his own little world. It’s hard to ignore Mr. Fucking Perfect. Oh my, I loved that nickname from the first time Dominic uttered it internally.

These two, they had a fair share of outlandish mishaps that had me laughing out loud. There was a botched flower order, an allergic reaction, and series of communication errors. Dominic did his very best not to fall in love with Tristian. He was his boss, a fairly unconventional boss, but still that was line that he didn’t want to cross. I liked that this wasn’t an immediate fall into the boss’s arms and let him pay for everything situation. Dominic has his own standards and he isn’t going to lower them for anyone.

I loved the text messages and scenes with the two of them together. I had to know what was going to happen next, how everything was going to turn out. It was nice seeing that Tristian didn’t give up on Dominic. Everything happened quickly and intensely, but he found a way to show Dominic that he was sincere. Even when Dominic made it near impossible.

Their chemistry together was excellent. When they ended up in the same areas together, I was waiting for that moment they would acknowledge all the flirtation that had been going on. Tristian did a lot of the chasing and convincing and I wish Dominic would have just given in, just a little, before he finally did. But other than that, I loved Tristian and Dom. They were adorable and I’m glad to see there is a Christmas Novella being released as well, A Christmas Situation. That review will be next up! I’m excited to read it.
